A SOUTHPORT swingers club, shut down by the council and evicted by its body corporate, was holding parties a floor above a teaching school for foreign students.
The X-Club was shut down last month following police, resident and business complaints.
The X-Club did not obtain a development permit for the operation from the council and residents and other businesses made complaints about noisy gatherings of up to 100 people.
Adult News has learned accountants, lawyers and the English language school complained when the X-Club moved into the Stradbroke Plaza late last year.
Operator Greg Clarkson has asked the club's patrons to sign an online petition that will be passed on to the council - however he has asked only for the first names of petitioners and an email contact.
``Emails aren't counted at all, that's not an authentic petition,'' said Southport councillor Dawn Crichlow.
A unit owner in the complex said the building was classified as `mixed use', allowing both commercial and residential uses.
``It's totally inappropriate for the environment and the circumstances,'' said the unit owner, who wished not to be named. ``They should go to industrial areas.
``The body corporate has told them to get out but I know they have put a jacuzzi in there and I don't think anyone has seen their belongings moved out.''
Mr Clarkson wrote on his website: ``Without any knowledge of what goes on at our club, there has been an undertaking by the other business owners in our building to make numerous official complaints to the police and Gold Coast City Council, accusing us of numerous illegal activities including prostitution.
``Help support our club and our lifestyle. If we go, we could be the last of our type of club in Queensland.''
Mr Clarkson hoped to open the doors again this weekend.
Nick Inskip, a spokesman for the Queensland Adult Business Association, said swingers parties were popular on the Gold Coast.
``On any weekend, there could be 30 or 40 being held in Queensland and you could expect 10 to 15 to be on the Gold Coast,'' he said.
``Parties are held for age groups, special interests and affluent swingers groups.
``I've heard of parties on boats in the Broadwater. It's not for everybody, it's a lifestyle choice for people who want to spice up their life. If they were walking down the street, you wouldn't pick them out as being any different.' |
