HOW to beat John Howard? Kevvy Rudd took the reverse-psychology approach: he lunched with Brian Burke, visited (but didn't look at) pole-dancing girls, reinvented his battling childhood and - hey presto! - his party figures have soared. And what about Maxine McKew, the former TV anchorette now threatening to unseat wee Johnny in Bennelong? She seems to have taken the Princess Di approach. Just as Di became the Queen of Hearts, Princess Max tells The Monthly magazine: "I want to be a champion for teachers". Yes, a sort of Princess of Blackboards. Indeed, the rapture over Max is almost Di-like. "Some people burst into tears when they see her on their doorstep," claims star-struck writer, Judith Brett. Just one door-to-door sales pitch too many, it seems.
