THE pornography ban in remote communities will be effective in less than a month, but residents will still have access to adult movies through pay-TV. Maningrida Council chief executive John Horgan said pornographic DVDs were a problem at one stage, but he said he remained concerned about television programs. ``A lot of people out here have ... (pay-TV) and there are pay-per-view adult movies and an adults-only channel,'' he said. ``I don't know how they rate the content on these channels, because I never watch it, but obviously it's for adults only.'' Mr Horgan said lots of children watch these movies and they are ``great imitators''.
Austar spokeswoman Emma Rackley said it only showed R-rated material on the channel, not X-rated, so it was not affected by the government's bans. But Mr Horgan said the material is still sexual in nature and should still be banned. The bans are part of the Commonwealth's intervention legislation, which were passed through the Senate two weeks ago. The laws will become effective from September 15. Under the laws, people caught with five or more pornographic videos or magazines will be considered traffickers and could face up to two years in prison. One element of the legislation is a ban on X-rated films and Category 1 and Category 2 pornographic books and magazines. Unlike existing offences in the NT, the ban applies to possessing prohibited material without the intention to copy or sell the material. People in possession of ``level one'' prohibited material will face fines up to $5500. Those in possession of ``level two'' material face fines up to $11,000. |
