McNamara to ease regional growing pains |

Queensland's newest cabinet minister is expected to drive a renewed focus on promoting fast-growing regional areas of the state. Incoming premier Anna Bligh today named Andrew McNamara, 48, as the only new face in her cabinet line-up. His portfolio - expected to relate to regional issues - will be revealed tomorrow morning, just before the Bligh cabinet is sworn in at Government House. Mr McNamara was born in Brisbane but now lives at Point Vernon in Hervey Bay in south-east Queensland. Hervey Bay is one of the fastest-growing areas in Australia. Its importance was highlighted when former premier Peter Beattie made it his first port of call during last year's state election campaign.
The former solicitor, who says he paid his rent as a law student by cleaning toilets, was elected to state parliament in 2001. His successful campaign made headlines when a national sex industry lobby group distributed a lewd how-to-vote card supporting him. The Eros Foundation flier featured a grandmother holding a sex aid, suggesting voters should support Labor if they wanted to "stick it up the politicians at this election". |
