Lib MP target of gay slur
THE ``dirt'' fight between the Federal Government and Opposition has escalated with allegations a Coalition minister is a regular visitor to gay bath houses. The Government is blaming the Labor Party for circulating a ``fact'' sheet on the married minister, which alleges he has sexually harassed other men in political circles. A copy of the sheet, which names the minister, has been given to journalists. It was not shown to the Sunday Herald Sun by the Labor Party. It says: ``Witness has seen him go to a bath house in Sydney on several occasions. Rumored that he is sleeping with one of his staff members in Canberra.''
The selective distribution of the allegations comes in a week in which Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd accused the Government of running a ``dirt unit''. He blamed such a unit for a TV report about a heart-valve replacement operation he had undergone many years ago as a result of a childhood bout of rheumatic fever. Mr Rudd claimed the story was designed to question his fitness for the office of Prime Minister. He warned it was a sign of the sort of election campaign the Coalition planned to wage. While condemning the Government, Mr Rudd has apparently not disciplined union boss Kevin Reynolds over public smear comments. Union sources said Mr Reynolds told a meeting of Construction, Forestry, Mining and Engineering Union members in Perth that Mr Rudd and Ms Gillard had something to hide and that he had ``many secrets'' he could reveal about Labor's inner circle.
