Keep the sleaze at bay, not in Nelson Bay |
AFTER the Gold Coast, Port Stephens is Australia's favourite family destination. It is a wonderful place to raise a family. In recent times citizens of Nelson Bay have expressed concern with the attempts of restricted premises selling X-rated material to set up business in the main shopping areas. Brothel owners have also signalled their intention to move into the area. The newly formed community group Keep Our Families Safe (KOFS) is a response to these developments. KOFS aims to protect women and children by creating public awareness of the toxic effects these premises have on a community. Many people are simply unaware of the proven link between pornographic material and violent sexual crimes. Wherever there is an increase in the circulation of pornographic material there is an increase in violent crime in the community.
A consultant to the Australian Law Reform Commission, Fellow of the Australian Psychology Society, Victorian barrister and chairman of forensic psychology at Monash University, Dr Don Thompson, in an address to the Victorian Criminal Justice Symposium, said: "The conclusion I draw from the findings is that pornography is causally related to sexually violent behaviour." Northern Territory Supreme Court Justice Sir William Kearney said: "People who think there is no connection between pornography and the violent and bizarre crimes that come before the courts ought to do the case studies."Detective Senior Constable Brad Hefner says in eight years work with the Juvenile Aid Bureau every sexual offender he had charged had used pornography as a stimulant to crime. "Pornography is the recurring factor and in every major sexual investigation, pornography has been an issue," he said. KOFS and other concerned citizens do not want an increase in the circulation of this toxic material in our community. We believe in the right to speak on behalf of children who are most at risk and in most cases unable to defend themselves.
