Greens Campaign on Legalising X in States
The Greens have revealed that part of their election policy is a commitment to push for the legalization of X rated films in all states of Australia. Section 39 of their ‘Measures’ platform states that, ‘The Australian Greens will introduce a nationally consistent approach to the regulated sale of X-rated material.’ This policy was cemented between the Greens and Fiona at a meeting just after the Victorian state election and is the first time that a political party has recognized the inequities of the so called ‘national’ classification code. The Greens’ policies can be viewed here. Because the Greens are finalising preference deals which are likely to deliver Greens' preferences in marginal seats to Labor, and Labor's Senate preferences to the Greens, the government and Family First have panicked and come out with some ridiculous statements. Kerry Anne Walsh reported in last Sunday’s Sun Herald that, “Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile kicked off the hysteria on Friday by asserting that parents should fear Labor would secretly agree to support the Greens' policy of relaxing regulations on X-rated videos. Family First Senator Steve Fielding - facing defeat without Labor preferences - screamed louder, slamming the "grubby deal" that would deliver "drug shooting galleries in your street".”
We have been onto Vaile’s office saying that his comments are ridiculous as the Greens are only saying they want to introduce the Coalition’s X rated policies across all states so that we really do have a truly national scheme. Members will remember that back in year 2000 when Eros’ strategy for creating a new Non Violent Erotica classification fell over at the last minute, the government then applied these new NVE Guidelines to the X category. Mark Vaile was a party to this decision which effectively created a Howard government X rated category’.
