Censors say that's enough, MUFF |

A CHALLENGE to the OFLC" reads the synopsis of the one-minute film 60 Second Relief in the program of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival (MUFF); a red rag to a bull if ever there was one. Indeed, the censor's office rose to the challenge and blocked its planned MUFF screening. It's one of seven films that have been pulled from the MUFF schedule. Others include 70K, a locally made film about underground graffitists (among them Noam Jason Shoan, who recently copped a three-month jail sentence for graffiti vandalism).
The legendary 1970 German "sex education" film Schulmadchen-Report (aka The Schoolgirl Report) and Ashley & Kisha, described by its US producer as part of a series of "erotic documentary films about real couples . . ." The Classification Operations Branch's spokesman says MUFF was not granted the exemption from classification required for public exhibition of these films as some had previously been classified X or refused classification altogether, while others, were they submitted for classification, would in the director's view be similarly classified. Still on MUFF, an extra screening of opening night film A Nocturne, by Bill Mousoulis, has been scheduled this Saturday at 9pm at Loop Bar, 23 Meyers Place, Melbourne. FILM Destricted (Britain/US, 2005, 18+) is a collection of seven short films by art-film practitioners including Matthew Barney, Larry Clark and Gaspar Noe exploring the boundaries between pornography and eroticism.
