Bob Collins dies, leaving child sex question unanswered |
THREE days before he was due to appear in court on child sex offences, and less than three weeks before facing child pornography charges, former Labor senator Bob Collins died in his sleep.
His death in Darwin early yesterday followed a long illness, but the timing was unfortunate.
Mr Collins will never get to defend his reputation, and the boys who maintained that he had abused them will never have their day in court. The former Hawke and Keating government minister was expected in Darwin Magistrates Court on Monday to defend child sex charges dating back to the 1970s that involved four boys. The Weekend Australian has learnt that one of his accusers detailed evidence against him to a friend more than 10 years ago. A witness who was due to give evidence next week, corroborating the claims, yesterday said he had been approached by the Aboriginal complainant from the community of Maningrida, east of Darwin, in 1995 with disturbing allegations
``The (male) complainant and friends were invited around to Collins's house in Darwin from Kormilda College,'' the witness said. ``Collins would give them drugs and alcohol and encourage them to perform sex acts.'' But yesterday, the witness was contacted by the prosecution and told that his services were no longer required. ``The cops told me when they interviewed me (in 2004) that they had been trying to get him for 30 years,'' the witness said. ``So it's been a longstanding issue.'' Another of Mr Collins's alleged victims who will not get his day in court was Aboriginal actor and musician Tom E.Lewis, who came to national prominence in the 1978 film The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith. Lewis claims he was sexually abused by Mr Collins when, as a young man, the politician ran a market garden at Maningrida on the Arnhem Land coast. Three years ago, Lewis told The Australian: ``I hate to be using something when somebody is sick ... but I do have a strong belief you should stand strong.'' Lewis is believed to have flown from Tasmania to Darwin yesterday ahead of Monday's planned committal hearing. Despite allegations, and unsubstantiated rumours that these accusations were the tip of the iceberg, tributes flowed across the Top End yesterday for a man regarded as a Northern Territory legend. While many in the Territory found it hard to believe he could have a case to answer, subsequent child sex charges in Canberra made some think twice. unresolved.' |
