THE battle to win the high-definition video-disc war has all the nHD-DVD format and the Sony-led Blu-ray disc has everything, from porn studios backing HD-DVD, rumours of Blu-ray disc rot and software retailers declining to stock HD-DVD titles. Pioneer has sided with the Blu-ray camp and has fired its first salvo in Australia by releasing its $1999 BDP-LX70 player. The new machine is finished in Pioneer's gloss-black, which looks ahead to the brand's ground-breaking Project Kuro range of eighth-generation plasma TVs and matching audio-visual receivers, which will be released this year. The new Pioneer is the first player in Australia to process Blu-ray's 1080p video signal at 24 frames a second. The movies we see at the cinema are shot at 24 frames a second. But the first Blu-ray and DVD players to arrive in Australia converted this frame rate to 60 frames a second. Having said that, the picture quality of all the 60-frame Blu-ray and HD-DVD players we've tested -- and this includes the Panasonic DMPBD10, Samsung's BDP1000 and Toshiba's HDDJ35 -- trounce standard DVD by a big margin.
