Ban same-sex marriage' - ELECTION 2007 |

THE federal Marriage Act should be amended to prevent the states from recognising same-sex and de facto relationships, a conference on marriage has demanded. The National Strategic Summit on Marriage, Family & Fatherhood, held at Parliament House yesterday, ended with a call for the federal Government to block the states from according same-sex relationships and so-called ``marriage-lite'' -- the registration of de-facto couples -- the same status as marriage.
The one-day conference was organised by the Fatherhood Foundation, a self-described faith-based charity, and attended by politicans from both sides of parliament, including John Howard, Philip Ruddock, Joe Ludwig, Bill Heffernan, Kevin Andrews and Tanya Plibersek. Researcher for the Festival of Light -- a Christian ministry -- Richard Egan, said the unique status of marriage would be undermined if states were allowed to register same-sex or marriage-lite unions. Another speaker, Dr Stuart Reece argued that homosexual lifestyles correlated with a range of negative health outcomes, from sexually transmitted disease to obesity, and described homosexuality as ``an addiction''. The Prime Minister briefly addressed the forum, saying he supported attempts to strengthen the institution of marriage and family, which he described as ``the best social welfare device mankind has ever devised''. However, he made clear he did not support discrimination against homosexuals. |
