Acclaimed Canberra crime fiction writer Dorothy Johnston is quick to point out that her latest book's cover featuring a man pulling on stockings and plot about a cross- dressing politician is not based on Alexander Downer. Or any other politician, for that matter, she said at the launch of her new crime novel, Eden, at Exhibition Park yesterday. Sure, the federal Foreign Affairs Minister once donned fishnet stockings as a stunt, but Johnston said the victim in her latest work was fictitious. And in any case her victim was an independent candidate in ACT politics..Eden is Johnston's third book in her series about Sandra Mahoney, a fictitious Canberra detective. In it, a politician called Eden is found dead in a Canberra brothel. Johnston said there would be one more in the series and, as each book coincided with a season, Eden was summer. Although there is a public perception that Canberra is not the ideal backdrop for salacious crimes, Johnston disagrees. ''Canberra is schizoid in a way, with its public image,'' the award- winning author said. ''There is such a temptation to be greedy here, because you have the country's biggest spender here the Government.' ' Yesterday's launch coincided with the Canberra Readers and Writers Festival and Lifeline's biennial book fair. Johnston dedicated Eden to her son, Kim, a geologist who drove from the Hunter Valley to be at the launch. Her previous book, 2005's The House of Number 10, about a single mother who finds herself working in a Canberra brothel to make ends meet, had been dedicated to her daughter, Helen.
