IT WILL be illegal to discriminate against women breastfeeding in public places, such as on trains and buses and in restaurants, as well as in the workplace, under legislation to be introduced by the State Government this week. The Premier, Morris Iemma, said he was concerned that some mothers, especially those returning to work, were stopping breastfeeding for fear of discrimination.
"Unfortunately, there are still some people who retain unsympathetic attitudes towards breastfeeding in public, including in the workplace," Mr Iemma said. "These new laws will provide breastfeeding mothers with the full protection of the law, ensuring that children in NSW are given the best possible start in life."
Women are regularly asked to leave public premises - restaurants, for example - if they are breastfeeding, women's organisations say. |

THE ``dirt'' fight between the Federal Government and Opposition has escalated with allegations a Coalition minister is a regular visitor to gay bath houses. The Government is blaming the Labor Party for circulating a ``fact'' sheet on the married minister, which alleges he has sexually harassed other men in political circles. A copy of the sheet, which names the minister, has been given to journalists. It was not shown to the Sunday Herald Sun by the Labor Party. It says: ``Witness has seen him go to a bath house in Sydney on several occasions. Rumored that he is sleeping with one of his staff members in Canberra.''
The selective distribution of the allegations comes in a week in which Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd accused the Government of running a ``dirt unit''. |

ORAL and anal sex in private between consenting heterosexual adults would be legalised under a Bill introduced in Singapore's parliament. Under the city-state's first major penal code amendments in 22 years, a section criminalising “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” would be repealed.
The Bill would also create new offences to tackle child prostitution and sex tourism.
Singapore has in recent years gradually eased social restrictions that have given it a straight-laced reputation. But while the Bill takes a softer line on heterosexual sex, a ban on acts of “gross indecency” between males will remain. Gay rights activists have said authorities have not laid charges under the section in recent years, even though it remains in force. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore's Second Minister for Information, Communications and the Arts, said earlier this year that the city-state was undergoing liberalisation while retaining a very strong conservative core. Although prostitution itself is not an offence in Singapore, the Bill would make it an offence to obtain commercial sex with a person under 18. |
