Don't suppose you saw the ABC's 7.30 Report last night.
There was a very interesting segment speculating that religion is set to play a large part in the lead-up to the federal election and the Australian Christian Lobby, among other religious groups, including the non-voting Exclusive Brethren, would be hot to trot. One thing that caught my eye, but is incidental to this blog, was that the ACL in its graphic insignia spelt "christian" with a small "c" - surely not a "Christian" way of referring to Christ. That aside, the Managing Director of the Australian Christian Lobby, which aims to see Christian principles and ethics accepted and influencing the community, and featured in last night's show, is a chappie called Jim Wallace AM. |

TWO films that were pulled from the program of the Melbourne Underground Film Festival have proceeded to win prizes. Screenings of 70K and Ashley and Kisha were cancelled due to bans by the Office of Film and Literature Classification, but the festival's jury was so impressed, according to MUFF's press release, it named 70K joint best documentary (with Garth Goes Hitch Hiking) and Ashley and Kisha won awards for best foreign film and best foreign director.
The OFLC did not grant exemptions for those films, as they would have been rated X or RC (refused classification) were they submitted, says the office's spokesman. The classification guidelines say that a film containing "detailed instruction or promotion in matters of crime" falls into the RC category (70K is a documentary about local graffitists), while material "which contains real depictions of actual . . . sexual activity" is rated X. The ban has prompted Ashley and Kisha's New York-based director, Tony Comstock, to step up his campaign against the OFLC. |

Globalised production and niche markets make more flexibility essential.
RECENTLY a small St Kilda video store, Out Video, drew the attention of the federal Attorney-General's Department for selling and renting imported titles that have not been classified in Australia. Bureaucrats may be doing their job, but by acting against a small niche video shop, they have inadvertently exposed critical flaws in our film classification laws.
Out Video markets films primarily directed at the gay and lesbian community. Many are produced overseas and never achieve general or selected release in Australia. And because of the prohibitively high cost of classification, they never get classified. |

BEIJING: China has banned TV and radio ads for push-up bras and figure-enhancing underwear in the communist government's latest move to purge airwaves of ``social pollution''. The ban, by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, or SARFT, also bars advertisements for sexual aids including tonics and sex toys, along with ``inelegant images'' in ads for what it referred to simply as ``adult products''. Regulators have also banned television shows about cosmetic surgery and sex changes. |

Yep, I'm horney, but I keep it in good proportion and don't tolerate fools, flakes, asses, assheads, damfools, donkeys, doodles, idiots, imbeciles, jackasses, jerks, madmen, mooncalfs, nincoms, nitwits, pinheads, birdbrains, featherheads, pushovers, ho-hos, laughingstocks, dingdongs or of course any twinkees what so ever. Are you still with me? I like a good work out; hope you do too! |
