THE trial of a former Catholic priest accused of sexually abusing a student nearly 40 years ago has been aborted because of an outburst from a witness in the Launceston Supreme Court.
Gregory Lawrence Ferguson, 70, has pleaded not guilty to one count of maintaining a sexual relationship with a young person aged under 17 in Burnie in 1970. Ferguson has been remanded in custody to appear in court in November. |

A BROTHEL will be built at Sandgate on a site which is only a stone's throw from a house where troubled teenagers are cared for. Newcastle City Council last night approved an application by Helena Gu to establish a brothel at 4 Ferry Road, in an industrial zone. Three parties objected to the proposal when it was placed on public exhibition in March. |

A BURLEIGH Waters sex shop operating illegally for more than three years was shut down yesterday after the council claimed it should never have traded in an industrial area. The Playhouse Adult Shop had applied for approval from council but was refused after officers deemed that the industrial zone was not suitable for a sex shop. Lucky Bitch Pty Ltd, which operates the Reedy Creek Road shop, has reported a roaring trade since opening and said it took a sole complaint last year to trigger the council response.
A council officer said that the shop was inconsistent with the industrial area. Sex drives ratings - TV and radio shocks and the nation is loving it. |
