Anglicans set deadline for US reforms |

ANGLICAN leaders have called for the US Episcopal Church to stop blessing same-sex unions and consecrating gay bishops, in a move aimed at avoiding any immediate split in the worldwide Anglican communion. Leading conservatives, including the Archbishop of Sydney, Peter Jensen, welcomed the communion's strict September 30 deadline issued to the US church to halt these practices. The joint communique was issued on Monday after a five-day meeting in Zanzibar, Tanzania, at which several archbishops refused to take communion with the US primate Katharine Jefferts Schori because of her support of the openly gay bishop Gene Robinson. Since Bishop Robinson's consecration in 2003 the "fabric of our common life together has been torn", the statement says. Dr Jensen said the communique "offered a chance to restore the communion but on the basis of biblical teaching". "I'm very pleasantly surprised ... it doesn't fudge the issue that love does not indefinitely wait and calls for the Episcopal Church to take concrete action to repair the damage done."
