Very Little ACT porn ends up in NT: Sex Industry |
A sex industry lobby group says the federal government should stop making pornography a scapegoat for indigenous child abuse, saying very little legal porn is being sent to the Northern Territory.
The Eros Foundation, which distributes X-rated movies around Australia by mail order, today said it had audited sales to Aboriginal communities following reports the government was considering banning the mail order of the films from the ACT to the NT.
The government has launched a crackdown on child sexual abuse in the NT, sending in police and troops to maintain order, and imposing welfare restrictions, bans on alcohol and pornography and child health checks. Eros says an examination of sales figures showed less than 0.5 per cent of pornography legally mailed from the ACT went to the NT. Eros CEO Fiona Patten said the audit showed the need for those involved in the government's plan to stop playing politics and "using porn as a scapegoat for the problem". She said the two main sources of pornography were highly illegal"refused classification" material being sold out of Darwin, and Austar's two R-rated satellite channels. "We have been writing to the federal and NT governments for over four years with this information and they ignored us," Ms Patten said. "Now they are shooting the messenger." An NT inquiry had also highlighted the pay-TV channel as a source of sexually explicit material, which could be bought for as little as $20 a week, "yet this had been ignored", Ms Patten said. The government is moving to ban possession of pornography in indigenous communities as part of its crackdown on child abuse. Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock has also called for tougher restrictions on the sale of X-rated pornography in the ACT and the NT, where it is legal. "The current focus is on strengthening the Northern Territory laws, we are also looking at ACT distribution," he said. |
