Territory porn shops facing X-rated ban |
Northern Territory News (004,Tue 03 Jul 2007)
THE Territory's porn shops want compensation if X-rated book, films and magazines are banned in NT. Attorney-General Syd Stirling is in talks with Federal counterpart Philip Ruddock to outlaw hardcore porn, part of the campaign against sex abuse at communities. There are 13 NT sex shops that sell X-rated material. One, Just Porn in Palmerston, employs four people and takes $15,000 a week -- more than half comes from X-rated sales. Owner Mark Rhodes said: ``My shop's name is Just Porn -- if they ban porn it would be like the pub with no beer.''
He said his business existed purely to sell a legal product and believes he should be compensated if the ban puts him out of business. He proposes a licensing scheme to monitor retailers of porn, similar to the ACT. ``Places such as servos are selling porn and shouldn't be,'' he said. He said X-rated material was non-violent erotica, reviewed and classified by the Federal Government. ``If you ban this stuff, obviously sex shops will have to source material from overseas, making pirated, unclassified DVDs showing things like violent erotica,'' he said. ``They might be worried about X-rated materials finding their way into communities, but you don't want unclassified DVD's in there.'' Spokeswoman Michelle Fraser said Mr Stirling did not necessarily support an outright ban. She said any ban in NT would require Federal legislation.
