MARK and ANNE-MAREE CURREN swapped a bank job and a commute to Sydney to own Adult Central, a sex shop close to home in Albion Park Rail. Mark Curren: Meeting and getting married to Anne-Maree is the best thing I have ever done. I used to say to one of my friends that he was the richest man in the world because he had children and a wife who loved him. When he was my best man, he said, "Guess what, I'm no longer the richest man in the world, you are now". And that's how I feel. You don't need money to be the richest or luckiest man, you need someone who loves you and cares about you.

We first bumped into each other in the McDonald's car park in Wollongong. I had come down from Blacktown for the day because it's a nice drive. I'm a very shy person but I just thought I'd do something outrageous. It was like we'd known each other for years.
When I met Anne-Maree, I was single for a good period and my first priority was my work. Now I realise that my life and my health are the priorities and work comes second.
When we bought a house in Dapto, I was getting up at 5am, on the train at 5.30am, getting home at 7.30pm and interacting with my family for two hours a day. Weekends were recovering from the week of travel.
Then our son had a seizure where his temperature spiked very quickly and he was rushed to hospital. I had a phone call in Sydney and jumped in a taxi. For an hour until I got to Engadine, I couldn't get an answer on what was happening. He was fine but that was the final straw. I knew I couldn't be two hours away from my family.
We won't sell anything illegal or DVDs involving animals. This shop is our livelihood so we're going to do everything above board. Within the law, we make no moral judgements.
If someone comes in and asks for a DVD of men dressed in nappies being whipped by a dominatrix, you can't tell them they're sick. Everyone coming into the shop has some fantasy, some fetish, so you just have to be open to everything.
In my younger days, I watched porn movies and swapped them with friends but as you get older, you change. I have a loving wife, a beautiful son and everything I want. I don't need a DVD. I guess I'm just a very lucky person.

People wouldn't look at Mark and I and think we owned an adult shop. I don't know what people think adult-shop owners should look like, but we're not the typical ones. Everywhere you get a reaction.
You can definitely see enough porn. After we moved the shop and unpacked all the DVDs, I thought "I never want to see a porn cover ever again". The toys are fun because you can always play with them but some of the DVDs are a bit harsh.
We bought the shop in April because Mark was travelling to Sydney where he had worked with a bank for 22 years.
We had just had a little boy and we were looking for a change in lifestyle. We just saw it as something different and I knew it was good for the previous owners.
I actually wake up with my husband now where before he was gone by the time I woke up. You feel like a married couple more, not just distant partners.
People have different opinions about the business. Some people are really strange about it and a bit stand-offish and they think it's a dirty thing. Other people think it's fantastic. It's really just a retail shop that sells unusual products - there's nothing else to it.
Porn is porn really, although there's a new Pirates DVD out which is very popular - it's more like a movie rather than just getting into it. It's a take-off of Pirates of the Caribbean but a little bit different - they don't have clothes on the majority of the time.
My sister and I often do parties and I think if the police searched our car on the way home, they'd think we were two kinky, kinky women. We have four suitcases of vibrators, toys and lingerie.

Maybe we'll have another baby. I'm not sure I'd open another shop just yet, although it's changed our life totally. |
