South-West priest sentenced for 1980s indecent assault
A South-West Catholic priest has received an 18-month suspended jail sentence for indecently assaulting a 14-year-old girl. Michael Slattery, 61, received the sentence in the District Court in Sydney this week after pleading guilty to three counts of indecent assault in the early 1980s. Slattery was a religious education teacher at a Sydney school when he befriended the teenager. During bush walks over about a year he embraced and kissed the girl and masturbated in front of her. He later moved to WA. He was made to stand aside from his duties as priest of the Harvey-Brunswick parishes when the allegations came to light in February last year. Bunbury Catholic Diocese Bishop Gerard Holohan said Slattery would no longer be allowed to serve as a priest.
