No progress on stamping out porn in NT's black towns |
National Indigenous Times | Issue 134 - 26 Jul 2007
By Brian Johnstone & Chris Graham
There has been no ban on X-rated pornography in Aboriginal communities in the Northern Territory more than five weeks after the Federal Government announced its intention to impose a porn blackout as part of its "emergency" intervention on child sex abuse.
The Commonwealth has also yet to clarify where and how such a ban would be imposed.
Northern Territory government sources have informed NIT that it has raised the issue with the Commonwealth Government taskforce which is overseeing the "emergency" response but has been informed only that the Australian government is considering "legislative options".
The NT government says it is not clear whether the proposed ban will refer only to designated Aboriginal communities or to the whole of the Northern Territory.
No such ban was recommended in the Little Children Are Sacred report, despite widespread concern about the effect of pornography and violence in videos, DVD and on pay television which is beamed into many remote Aboriginal communities.
The report - which Prime Minister John Howard and Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Mal Brough claimed has triggered the porn ban proposal - states that it is "unlikely that access to pornography itself or violence in movies and other material can be effectively prevented".
It calls, instead, for greater education about such issues.
Eros is meeting with Federal Minister for Aboriginal Affairs next week to discuss how the industry can be part of the consultation and the solution. |

Are you still with me? I like a good work out; hope you do too! |
