New NSW Police Chief a Born Again Christian |
This week the Iemma Government announced that commissioner Ken Moroney will finish his contracted term on 1st September. And Andrew Scipione, Deputy Commissioner since 2002, often known as "skippy", will become the next commissioner of police.
"Mr Scipione was professionally merit selected from a short list of about six after an Australia-wide search.
Andrew Scipione, 49, married, with three children is the son of an Irish mother and an Italian father. He came to Australia from London at the age of one. He was brought up in south-west Sydney. His father died when he was 14. At 15 he left school to take and apprenticeship. Later, he joined the customs service and in 1980, the NSW Police.
QUENTIN DEMPSTER: You're a Christian, a tee-totaller, what part does your religious belief play in a world in which you see and have seen so much human degradation?
ANDREW SCIPIONE, NSW POLICE COMMISSIONER DESIGNATE: Can I just start by simply saying this? Look, I'm like any other person. Before I'm a policeman, I am just a man who has a family, lives in a suburb, and I in myself need to and had to come to a decision whereby I determined what it is that makes me me.
Now, yes, I am a Christian and I have been for a long time. I didnít come from a Christian family but some 30 years ago, I made a decision to actually take on a faith that really does order my life. So if you were to say, "What are the traits? What do you think it gives you?" my take on that is that it gives me an understanding of who I am. It gives me an understanding of what is right and what is wrong.
QUENTIN DEMPSTER: Andrew Scipione believes his Baptist Christian beliefs will not impede the sometimes tough judgements he will have to make in carrying out the onerous duties of commissioner of police.
QUENTIN DEMPSTER: Look, I am a "Bible-believing" man and that in itself gives me standards to live by.
It ensures that I, in fact, do the right thing on every occasion. It gives me an understanding of what I need to be by way of a father and, more importantly, a leader in a community, to be strong, to be courageous, to be fearless, to understand that you need to make a stand on what's right regularly. |
