Manila mayor torches pirated porn VCDs, DVDs |
MANILA, Philippines -- Around P40,000 worth of pirated pornographic VCDs and DVDs and replicating machines from a motel in Quiapo were torched on Monday by Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim as part of his crackdown on smut materials in the city.
Optical Media Board (OMB) chair Edu Manzano, who was with Lim during the torching at the Bonifacio Shrine, lauded the mayor for targeting Quiapo, which is notorious for the proliferation of cheap pirated discs. "We will show everyone that we will destroy these materials so that it will serve as a lesson to stop violating the law," Lim said in Filipino. The alleged operator, Basare Macadantay, 29, a native of Lanao del Norte, was arrested in the entrapment operation at Polly and Pinky Lodging House at the corner of the Globo de Oro and N. Bautista streets, on Saturday.
The District Special Project Unit of the Manila City Hall Police acted on a tip that a certain "Basare" had replicating machines inside the motel, and that he also supplied X-rated discs to vendors in Quiapo, Sta. Cruz and Recto Avenue.
A team was then organized by the DSPU chief, Supt. Alejandro Gutierrez, to verify the information at 11 a.m. last Saturday.
In his affidavit of apprehension, Senior Police Officer 3 Amador Jareno, who acted as the poseur-buyer, said that he asked Macadantay to give him five CD copies of "Anal Princess Diaries."
Jareno then paid Macadantay P60 in marked money as replication charges, and arrested him afterward.
The policeman said he did not know exactly how many pirated discs were recovered from the suspect but put the number at "hundreds," aside from the recopied discs and replicating machines.
The secondhand machines that cost P8,000-P10,000 each could reportedly produce 360 copies in one hour, or 8,640 in 24 hours.
All in all, Jareno said the confiscated items cost about P40,000.
Macadantay was charged with violation of Art. 201 RPC (production and selling of pornographic materials), RA 9239 (an act regulating OMB) and City Ordinance Sec. 595 (engaging in business without permit). |
