Australia's experiment with apartheid, which began when Malcolm Fraser introduced native title to the Northern Territory and continued when Paul Keating adopted the Mabo decision, reached by the High Court on behalf of historian Henry Reynold's gardner, Eddie Mabo, has been a failure. I was never a specialist writer on Aboriginal issues, any more than I specialise in any particular field, whether it be the Middle East, the Australian economy, terrorism or politics in general, but I might have been the only journalist consistently taking a hard look at what I have increasingly come to consider to be nothing more or less than apartheid. Nobody took any notice, of course, any more than they took notice of representations from the peak body for the sex industry, the Eros Foundation.
X-rated means explicit sex, but no violence or horror, which is rated R. Not even spanking husbands who have been naughty and deserve to be punished gets an X. Swirlies are a no-no.

At every level Chief Minister, attorneys-general, chief of police it was ignored. Now, X-rated videos are to be banned in prescribed areas. That won't make any difference. Those are not the videos they watch. Maybe it has taken an election, as in the past significant policy changes have followed from campaign promises. That's democracy. If the voters want Aborigines to continue a life of violence, of rape, of drunkenness and drug abuse, they can say so in November. In the meantime, John Howard and the Aboriginal Affairs Minister Mal Brough have finally grasped the nettle. They are to be congratulated. Black children are also entitled to grow up to lead useful and rewarding adult lives. Their parents are entitled to be something other than creatures in an unholy experiment by romantic believers in the concept of the noble savage that surely has run its course.
