IT has been an expensive and long road for Deon Drake to be able to open his sex shop in Warrnambool. After eight stress-filled months of planning and passionate public criticism, he yesterday received a planning permit, giving the store the green light. ``I did expect a little bit of controversy, but certainly wouldn't say I expected the backlash I got,'' Mr Drake said yesterday. Foreplay, which will stock adult products and lingerie, will open its doors on September 1 after yesterday's go-ahead. His fight to open the store was only halted when a vocal lobby group formed to fight the proposal dropped its appeal to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal last month.
Mr Drake told The Standard that the legal fight had drained him of $40,000. ``The store will be a little restricted in terms of stock, a lot of expenses used to fight it were going into the store,'' he said. ``If I did it again, I would do it a little differently, but that is something you only learn by going through the process.'” The protesters agreed to drop their case if several conditions were attached to the permit. The store is not allowed to sell unclassified or X-rated material, customers have to be over 18 years old and it will be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Mr Drake said as the requirements were already statutory law nothing new had been imposed on the operation. |
