Shepparton will remain "mega adult sex store-free" after Club X sold the land it planned to develop to a local businessman on Friday. Club X had obtained a planning permit to develop a two-storey 580 sq m adult bookshop and a second premises of 240 sq m, signage and 33 car parks, on the site at 2-4 Carroll Rd, Shepparton East. Shepparton real estate agent Damian White and Son sealed the deal after months of negotiations. Damian White said the purchaser had no interest in keeping the permit for an adult sex shop. "I can't disclose the sale price, but it's by far and away a record price for business four land in Shepparton," Mr White said. He said contracts for the land had been exchanged and settlement was due early next month. Greater Shepparton City Council Mayor Jenny Houlihan said she was personally elated at the sale of the land, but could not speak for other councillors.
"In my opinion, I doubt that a business like this (Club X) is every going to add anything positive to Shepparton," Cr Houlihan said. "I think it is a relief to be able to put this thing to one side . . . I hope, as council, we can strengthen our policies to make it even more difficult for sex shops to set up here."
Council was expected to consider an application by Club X to extend its planning permit at its ordinary meeting tomorrow. "This is a new situation for councillors and I guess we will all discuss it (today) when we have our briefing," Cr Houlihan said. "This is a good day for Shepparton." Councillor Dallas Terlich said the sale was a victory for the people who had lobbied against the sex shop.
"I was really concerned about Club X coming to the town, particularly in such a prominent position, and the fact that it's now been sold and is not going to be used for that purpose is great," Cr Terlich said.
Cr Sondrae Johnson said she was delighted the land had been sold to someone with no interest in pornography. "The Social Impacts Regional Victorian group and the community have known at least a year that they were not going to go there, yet they've wasted council's time and resources with bogus applications to extend and amend the permit and that includes the latest to be considered on Tuesday," Cr Johnson said. "So they've totally wasted the council's time and resources when they knew and we knew they finished in Shepparton. "Glad to get rid of them." |
