Church will fight legal brothels bid
LEGISLATION to decriminalise prostitution and allow brothels to operate legally will be introduced in three weeks. Archbishop Barry Hickey yesterday indicated the Catholic Church was poised to fight the move. He said he could not understand why the State Government wanted to legalise prostitution. ``The evidence from Australia and elsewhere is that legislation strengthens the hand of those who exploit and damage women,'' he said. Attorney-General Jim McGinty said the reality was that prostitution already existed and police were forced to turn a blind eye to brothels. ``Unfortunately, prostitution is a way of life, but we cannot have a situation where brothels are illegal and the police have to turn a blind eye to it,'' Mr McGinty said. ``That's why we need to fix up the current situation. ``We will remove any suggestion of police corruption when the police are not required to turn a blind eye to an illegal activity. ``There will also be provisions in the legislation designed to protect sexual health and otherwise recognise the unfortunate reality of prostitution.'' Under the proposed changes, brothels would be subject to local government planning approvals and controls that govern business operations.
